Details
A perfect opportunity for trekkers who wish to summit their first Himalayan Peak. Stok Kangri is one of the main peaks of the Zanskar range standing tall at the height of 20,182 ft (6,153 m). The adventure-filled expedition travels through rugged terrains, remote valleys, scattered isolated villages and past hilltop monasteries to the base of the mountain.
A classic trek to a spectacular 6000m peak in Ladakh. The Stok range lies on the southern skyline of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, and Stok Kangri is the highest mountain in the range. During the first two days set aside for acclimatization, we visit the colourful monasteries of Shey & Thiksey and check out the charming market in Leh. We set off on our 4-day acclimatization trek to the Base Camp starting from Matho Village and then over the Matho La. The climb up to the summit is technically straightforward and safe of any objective dangers. On the summit stretch, we cross a glacier and then a steep climb onto the south ridge from where it is an exposed walk right up to the summit. It’s a challenging climb even for the fittest of the climbers and is a great adventure in Himalayan mountaineering.
What to expect
On a Technical Trek, the average day could involve more than 7 hrs of walking. These trips might cover difficult and glaciated terrain where the use of ropes and technical mountaineering equipment like crampons, harnesses, carabiners, descenders etc could come into play. On these trips, one is required to stay at high altitudes for lengthy periods of time and hence acclimatization is always a big concern. These treks can also throw a bit of surprise largely because of the unpredictable nature of the terrain and the snow/ ice conditions in the high mountains and hence we always have a contingency day or two built into the plan.
These trips would last more than two weeks and go to wild, remote places completely cut off from civilization. Trekking peaks also come under the same category as the level of technicality required to climb a trekking peak is similar.
